Unit 10 Final Blog-Review of overall well being

Hi Everyone,

I have learned many new things about myself throughout this course as I'm sure you have as well. In the beginning I rated my physcial and psychological well-being as 7 and 8 due to the fact I have been working on these areas for the last 2 years to improve my overall health after being diagnosed with high blood pressure. Some of the improvements I wanted to make was increasing my physcial activity by adding an extra day of walking and I have done that and starting on 8/15/11 I have signed up for a Zumba class 2 days a week to also improve my physcial health. My psychological health I planned to increase my relaxing time in the evening and weekends by cutting back on hours at work that really were not needed and improve on meditation techniques to helop me relax. I have cut back on the hours and that has helped tremendously to actually go home at a decent time so I can keep my schedule of walking and just sitting outside relaxing late in the evening. I do plan to use the Dacher CD now that we have completed it and see the benefit it can bring to my life. This CD can help me with the psychological and the spiritual which I rated as a 3 in the begining. I have improved in this area, but still need much needed improvement and I pland to practice these techniques given to us in this course to assist me in this quest. My overall well-being has improved and I have come to realize that all 3 of these areas can benefit my in my health and well-being and plan to take advantage of the new found knowledge I now have.

Holistic/Integral Health: My Journey
The American healthcare system is progressively growing and changing creating a new focus for true patient centered care. The focus of both healthcare and patients is moving more and more towards alternatives to conventional medicine focusing on the whole being-body, mind, and spirit and not just flesh, bones, and organs. Healthcare professionals who develop and practice integral health are knowledgeable in the ways of practice and benefits and can then educate, promote, and support patients in their journey in achieving integral health (Dacher, 2006).
My areas of weakness that need to be developed are the spiritual aspect of integral health. Improvement can always be accepted in the physical and psychological health, but I have a solid foundation in these areas, where as the spiritual concept needs development to establish a foundation to build on. As we have gone through this course I have had opportunity to assess my health physically, psychologically, and spiritually during the exercises and readings incorporated in this course. I discovered my physical and psychological areas are developed but are in need of improvement, but my spiritual life needs to be
Holistic/Integral Health 3
developed from the ground up. My strongest area would be psychological with my physical sided coming in next and my spiritual side being dead last. I had never really thought about health in the whole concept before so I never really focused on my health in these terms. Now that I have had this opportunity to see health in this way I can work on my weak area and enhance my stronger areas as well.
In order to improve my integral health improvement in all three areas of physical, psychological, and spiritual would need to be my focus in order for me to benefit from all that I have learned in this course. Goals that I will be setting to achieve improvement in my physical, psychological, and spiritual growth are:
A. Physical-Increasing my walking routine and adding another type of physical weekly exercise.
B. Psychological-Practicing relaxation techniques and relaxing more often during the work week.
C. Spiritual-Incorporating spiritual exercises in my life.
My strategies for these goals are simple and need to be set up and a commitment to achieve these goals needs to be my focus. My strategy for my physical health will be to increase my walking routine from 2 times a week to 3
Holistic/Integral Health 4
times a week and I will be adding a Zumba class on Monday nights starting in September. My strategy for improving my psychological health will be to increase my relaxation time, especially during the week to daily and to practice some of the meditation techniques we have learned about in this course. The Dacher CD will aid me in this goal and in my spiritual goal by adding this practice to my daily relaxation time to not only relax me but also enhance my spiritual side. Setting and achieving these goals I hope will put me on the right path to acquiring integral health.
Setting these goals and achieving them should be easily assessed in 6 months if I stick to my commitment. To assist me in achieving these goals and sticking to my commitment I have developed a calendar/check off with the events so I can keep up and check them off as I have completed each event daily. I have always been a person who found great success in completing task and reaching goals if I have them set up visually and can check each on off upon completion. This gives me not just a reminder of my goals by a sense of accomplishment upon completion. This course has provided with me with a different outlook on health and I have learned many new things that I plan to put to use in my own life as well as promote to others.

Unit 8 Blog A Review

Hi Professor,

This week I had the opportunity to go back and review and listen to the Dacher CS exercises from start to finish several times. With each session I found myself becoming more focused on the meditation practices and completing each exercise where as previous weeks I just got bored and gave up. My relaxation/meditation and focus began to improve and I felt the psychological benefits. I found the subtle mind and visualization exercies the most beneficial and plan to implement not just these 2 but all 3 practices in my life. I also plan to incrase my physical exercise routing with a routine of the Dacher CD afteward the physical exercise 2-3 times a week to start and move up from there

Unit 7 Blog Meditation Exercise

Hi Professor,

Meeting Asciepius meditation exercise was the one exercise out of the three I enjoyed the most. I found the visualization technique very relaxing and helpful in focusing on creating an open loving heart, mindm and spirit. I visualized my ex-mother-in-law whom has been deceased for the past 11 years. She was an important part of my life and we were very close. While alive she was the picture of love, caring, wisdom, and had a shinning light about her. This practice made me feel closer to her once again and I found myself understanding more so the point of what we have been learning in this course. I plan to continue the loving-kindness, subtle mind, and visualization practices in an effort to improve my journey to psychological and spiritual wellness.

The phase "One cannot lead another where one has not gone himself" in my mind means; a person may not be successful in promoting or supporting psychological, physcial, and spiritual health if they have not experience it themselves. In the field of healthcare professionals it would be beneficial to practice health and wellness based on the whole person in order to successfully promote and support your patients to do the same. In my life I can implement physical exercise and the psychological and spiritual practices of Loving-Kindness, Subtle Mind, and Visualizaiton practices in and effort to improve my well-being.

Unit 6 Loving Kindness/Integral Assessment

Hi again to all,

This weeks universal Loving Kindness meditation exercise I found somewhat easier probably because we just had to read about the exercise and not listen to the CD on how to complete the exercise. I took the book out back sat in my rocking chair and read the exercise, closing my eyes and relaxing, and repeating the phrases over and over. I felt relaxed and a sense of greater good, like I was praying for the help of others and myself, so that was nice. If by chance someone out their receives a blessing behind that exercise that is cool. With the Integral Assessment I found my areas of difficulty are in pretty much all areas of this process to Integral health and wellness. Like I said in the post for last week, I understand the part the mind can play in physical health and the importance of learning to control stressors in your life, I just find it more benefiting for me to be simpler in my approach. Psychospiritual would definitely be an area in need of improvement for me and if I work a little harder with the witnessing mind, calm-abiding, and unity consciousness maybe I can develop this area more. Listening again to the CD with the exercises we have been practicing when it is not a requirement but just because I want to may be another activity to promote in this area. I just believe some people are more in tune to this type of meditation and others are not. But maybe I'm wrong and just have not put out the right effort. But to be honest I find it boring.

Unit 5 Subtle Mind

Hi Everyone, Not sure what happened last week, but I'm reposting this blog. I do not see the powerpoint posted either. Hope everyone had a great week, I took a little R & R and spent some time with my family with no access to anything electronical, just us and nature and enjoyed it tremendously. Gave me time to think more about the Loving-Kindness and Subtle Mind exercises we have done over the last few weeks and my frustration of just not getting it. Both of these exercises seem like great tools for some or most people I just have trouble getting to the point I know we are striving far. The sounds of the waves of course are great and relaxing and are my favorite part, but that talking and wanting you to focus on this or that just loses me. I found myself getting up and filling up the bird feeders as I listened. Due to my blood pressure issues a few years ago I have learned alot about how stress can affect your body and so I have placed in my life not only physical activity of walking 3-4 times a week but time to relax everyday and let go of the things that may be bothering me so they do not fester and let go of the stress of the day. My way is different than what the exercises we have been completing each week. I see my way as simpler. I just like to sit in my rocking chair on my back porch and relax, I can actually sit our there for hours and thinking about absolutely nothing, just clear my mind and relax. Other times it is the perfect place and time for me to work out issues in order to resolve problems and stress. My son laughs at me, he will open the back door and just smile at me and go back in. I think to each their own, just find what works for you and work it.

Unit 4 Blog

Hi Everyone,

After completing the reading in chapter 6 and reviewing "Getting Started" I took the Dacher CD outside on my back porch to listen to the Loving Kindness exercise. This the place I go to every evening and relax, its quiet and I like to watch all the squirrels and birds in my backyard. I starting to think that my personality is just not cut out for this relaxing spiritual concept. I found the quiet moments on the CD with just the sound of the ocean very relaxing especially watching the critters in my yard. Then the lady would speak and it ruined it for me especially the part on thinking about a loved one who is suffering and take that suffering in, What was that all about, total mood changer. Any way hope some of you got more out of it than I did.

I read the section on mental workout and had a hard time understanding it, the concept seems way off beat to me. I understand what it means to take time and clear you thoughts of negative thoughts and learn to let go and relax, but that is as far as my mental work out goes.
